June 26, 2025 - Day 629 - The Bubble

At the end of every school year our 8th grade class creates an end of year play and performs it as a part of their graduation ceremony.

This project started more than two months ago and was getting to the climax of rehearsals leading up to this evening. Then during a sudden war with Iran, and missiles raining down for two weeks... everything stopped. Except for these kids. They found ways to meet in each other's houses, to practice together and to have faith that they will actually perform the play itself.

Their play was inspired by the Truman Show. In this future world, a bubble is created where there is complete peace and safety. This social experiment is meant to see how the kids develop and grow up.

But the bubble doesn't stop curiosity. It doesn't answer burning questions about history or the world around us. It doesn't give enough meaning to life. Knowing where you come from, can help guide where you are going and they want the truth... and are willing to stand up and fight for it.

A week ago, during distance learning I was heartbroken to come to the realization that I might not see my 8th graders again. Some of them, I have taught or know for 4-5 years (or even more). So I hosted a Google Meet and to my dismay, only 6 came. I was pretty devastated at how the year was ending. After many conversations and understanding what they went through to pull off this amazing evening was so moving.

This incredible group of teenagers danced and sang. They performed their hearts out tonight and were phenomenal doing it. What memories they will have. They deserve it. Their faith that everything would work out, while missiles rained down paid off exponentially tonight.

May we all have a little more resilience and faith that things will work out... and put in the work to make it happen like these kids did tonight.
