December 28, 2024 - Day 449 - 4th candle of Hanukkah

Night 4 - continuing to illuminate the darkness

Shabbat night at 2:11am red alert sirens were activated in our area. The Houthi terrorist pirates launched a fresh barrage of missiles at Israel... for the 10th day in a row, but the first in our area.

Siikwan had crawled into our bed so we had to wake her up to go back into our safe room (the girl's bedroom). Obviously this was scary for her. Being suddenly woken up in the middle of the night to loud sirens abs then to be rushed into another room is obviously unsettling. It took her a good while to fall back asleep.

So in the morning we talked about it. I opened a map and did my best to explain the complexities of war to my 6 year old. We talked about the Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas, a bad man named Assad, and the ultimate bad guy/s the Aiyotolla and the IRGC. We also talked about how the people in Gaza, Yemin, Lebanon, Syria and Iran have been held hostage by the bad guys too... In their own homelands. She agreed that it was awful.

We also talked again about the Iron Dome and what it does to help keep us safe.

You know what they say... Knowledge is power. She has been hearing these words buzzing around her for over a year. Putting clarity and context into my explanation really helped to calm her nerves (and mine).

Yet when the sun went down again we lit another candle. A symbol of our light, truth, and freedom of religion.

4 candles.
4 more to go.

Have a safe and happy Hanukkah.
