This year we celebrated Thanksgiving with our good friends.Turkey, pumpkin pie, stuffing, cranberries... all around a big table and feeling thankful. So now, over a year into a brutal regional religious war I want to pause and show some gratitude.
First and foremost, I'm thankful to have survived in relative peace through the past 420 days.
I'm thankful that out of the rocket alerts in my area.. my girls have only been awake for one.
I'm thankful that we're too advanced in age to have to fight an actual war.
I'm thankful that although I've carried my gun for the past 419 days, it's remained holstered and hasn't been drawn once.
I'm thankful that my girls are too young to truly know the horrors of the past 14 months.
I'm thankful that we have a home that is safe and warm.
I'm thankful that our home has a safe room, and that room is our girls' bedroom.
I'm thankful that I've been able to go to work, and teach in a classroom...not a bomb shelter, or a tent, or on zoom. An actual classroom this whole time.
I'm thankful that Israel and Hezbollah came to a ceasefire arrangement this week...even if I think a peace agreement is truly a long-term solution, a ceasefire should be celebrated too.
I'm thankful for the countless soldiers and civilians who gave their lives to protect our country.
I'm thankful for the opportunity to learn more about my own people and to advocate for us in whatever way I can.
I'm thankful for all of the people fighting across the world for Jewish people's civil rights.
I'm thankful for real peace makers and dialogue creators. Without talking, I don't believe we will really find peace or security.
I'm thankful that I live in a place that I can be free to be a Jew and love myself for it. (I spent enough time being a self-hating Jew.)
I'm thankful for my own sweet Olam Katan (my small and immediate world). My beautiful children and my wonderful husband.
I'm thankful for turkey.
