Day 323 - August 23, 2024 - Reflections from watching the DNC

After days of watching speeches the DNC, culminating with Kamala's acceptance speech last night I have a few take aways.

1. Jon and Rachel Polin-Goldberg were painfully inspirational and the auditorium chanting "Bring Them Home", brought me to tears.
2. Kamala was clear and straightforward about her views on Israel, Gaza, and peace in our region, even directly calling out the sexual violence and brutality of October 7.

These two events made me proud to have been a democrat for so many years. Because in the past few years, I've felt like a political nomad, not identifying fully with the politics of one side or another.

Many pro Israel supporters feel like Trump is the only solution. That he will restore peace in the middle east. That anyone not supporting him, must be anti-Israel or antisemitic. This isn't true. It's more of the lies that keeps being told to us over and over again. Trump is not the only solution.

I love America.
I love our freedoms, our culture, our feeling that anyone has the opportunity to succeed.
America the great.

Yet the divide between right and left is no longer a crack, but a deep chasm of misunderstanding and hate.

I believe it's up to the silent majority of moderates to stand together against extremism, terrorism, and hatred of all forms. What I saw at the DNC when Jon and Rachel Polin-Goldberg approached the podium to speak about the hostages and their son, Hersh, was unifying and inspirational. To #BringThemHome is a non-partisan humanitarian crisis affecting human beings from across the world.

Jon and Rachel Polin-Goldberg are two of the most inspirational people I've ever seen and I hate that the world has to know them through such deep and agonizing pain. Here we see a man and wife who have traveled the world and spread messages of nothing but peace and hope and the return of their stolen son. Jon and Rachel are orators speaking for 323 days straight. When will we listen?

As this war drags on and approaches the one year mark...
As we teeter on the edge of a real World War...
As the Islamic Republic occupying Iran continues to threaten annihilation...
As allied forces come together in their antiterrorism stances...
As we try to understand where we are and where we're going...

With all of these things happening, we must stop, look, and listen to what's going on around us. We must increase our awareness and empathy. We must find our voices...and use them to stand up to tyranny, hatred, and intolerance.
