I was out running errands today when I received an email from the teaching college I attended that my official degree is ready to be picked up.
So, since I'm flying to America next week I jumped at the opportunity to grab it before it's archived.
So here are some reflections after officially holding it in my hands.
1. I can't believe I did it.
2. I did it through a pandemic.
3. I had two kids while getting my degree.
4. I turned 40 while still halfway through.
5. I worked fulltime and ran a department while learning.
6. It was NOT all in English, at least half the classes were in Hebrew.
I can't believe I did it. Did I make that clear? Because it's really really true.
It wasn't easy. It was hard and stressful. I didn't sleep much during those 5 years, but that's true for most college students / new mothers.
I was a bit disappointed in the end. I have memories of my own parents finishing their degrees and attending their graduations. I wanted my girls to be there. They're a big part of my story. Siikwan went to college with me a few times as an infant even. Unfortunately kids were prohibited, and additionally the insanely low number of guests-allowed meant that choosing who would come would be impossible. So I opted not to attend. It was also a particularly busy week teaching...add excuse, etc.
I didn't go. Truth be told, I finished a year ago... the graduation ceremony just takes place a year later. 🥴
It's a bittersweet ending for me. I never got to wear a cap and gown and have my name called while walking across stage. But I did finally finish my degree and I have the fancy velvety folder and everything to prove it.
So finally...
After everything...
I'm done. 🎓
